About
Historian by research. Swordsman by practice.
I’m Jason Hulott, a published historian and practising swordsman based in Canterbury.

I’ve spent nearly 30 years training across martial traditions: German longsword in the Liechtenauer tradition, Japanese iaijutsu and kenjutsu, Bartitsu, First World War trench-fighting systems and the quarterstaff. Today I’m Chief Instructor of Canterbury Medieval Combat, East Kent’s Historical European Martial Arts club, and co-founder of the East Kent Warbow Society and SwordTribe.
Alongside the training, I research and write. My work has appeared in Medieval World Magazine and Tudor Times, and I’ve presented at the University of Kent’s MEMsFest, English Heritage sites, universities and history groups across Kent. I’ve served as a trustee of the Combined Military Services Museum, and I’m a member of EXARC, the international network for experimental archaeology.
That combination is what I bring to every talk and every project: history that has been read, tested and understood in practice.
