Historical combat consultancy for film and TV

Audiences are sharper than ever about historical fights. Wrong weapons, impossible techniques and armour that might as well be cardboard break the spell. I help productions get combat right without losing drama.

How I can help

Script and storyboard review

Notes on weapons, technique, injuries and how fights realistically ended.

Adviser to stunt and fight coordinators

Period technique and options that give choreography a historical foundation.

Actor coaching

Period weapon handling, stance and movement, so your cast look like they’ve trained for years.

Armour, weapons and props

Accuracy checks before they reach the camera.

Documentaries

On-screen expert, contributor and demonstrator.

Replica maces, a ball-and-chain flail, a hooked dagger and studded clubs laid out on a training mat

Onsite

Onsite, from first idea to final take

I can join early creative meetings to develop fight concepts that fit the characters, period and story, work through options with your stunt and fight team, and run prep sessions with actors before formal rehearsals begin. Some replica kit comes with me – depending on the period, so ideas are tested physically.

Periods and styles

Medieval European combat is my core, armed and hand-to-hand, in and out of armour. I also cover Japanese sword traditions, Bartitsu and Victorian self-defence, and First World War trench fighting.

Selected work

A lot of my previous is under NDA

Frequently asked questions

Do you replace our fight coordinator?

No. I work alongside stunt and fight coordinators, giving them the historical foundation. They keep ownership of safety and choreography.

Can you work on short notice?

Often, yes. Script reviews can usually be turned around in 7-10 days, and remote advice is available throughout production.

Do you work outside the UK?

Yes, by arrangement. Remote work is available anywhere.
